Diamond Dynasty Beginner's Guide (MLB The Show 26)

Diamond Dynasty Beginner's Guide (MLB The Show 26)

Diamond Dynasty looks overwhelming the first time you boot it up. There are a dozen menus, a few currencies, several programs running at once, and a hundred things asking for your attention. Most of them can wait.

The good news: the right order to do things barely changes from year to year. The programs get new names and the cards get new faces, but the path from a brand-new account to a squad you're proud of is the same. This guide walks you through that path, step by step, and it applies to MLB The Show 26 today and to every new game after it.

The Short Version

If you only read one section, read this one. Do these in order:

  1. Open your free packs first. You need a solid squad before you can grind anything efficiently.
  2. Sell expensive pulls you don't need. Most cards lose value over time, so cash them in while they're worth the most.
  3. Grind the free content. Programs, Conquest maps, Diamond Quest, Showdowns and Mini Seasons build your team without costing a Stub.
  4. Go online once your squad is ready. Knock out the Multiplayer Program, which usually has some of the best rewards in the mode.
  5. Let the XP Path fill up while you play. It only moves with gameplay XP, and its top rewards keep you competitive all year.
  6. Let ShowZone do the math. Sync your inventory, and use our tools to finish collections, build your best lineup and grind programs with the right team.

Everything below is the longer version of those six steps.

What Is Diamond Dynasty?

Diamond Dynasty is MLB The Show's card-collecting mode, sometimes called its "ultimate team" mode. You build a full roster from cards earned through gameplay, packs, programs and the in-game marketplace. Cards run from Common up to Diamond, the top tier. Your squad plays offline against the CPU and online against real players.

The mode is free to play. You can build a fully competitive Diamond squad without spending real money, and most of the community does.

Step 1: Open Your Free Packs First

Before you grind a single mission, open everything already sitting in your inventory: carryover packs from last year's game, pre-order and edition packs, Twitch Drops, and anything from the starter content. A brand-new squad is weak, and those packs are the fastest way to fix that.

Then knock out the starter program and the first free player programs. They're designed to hand new accounts their first Gold and Diamond cards, and a stronger lineup makes every mission after this faster.

Step 2: Sell Expensive Pulls (With a Couple of Exceptions)

If you pull an expensive Diamond you don't need, sell it. Almost every card loses value as the year goes on, because better cards keep releasing and the old ones get cheaper. A pull is usually worth the most the week you open it.

There are a few exceptions. A handful of superstar cards hold their value all year (in recent games, Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge). If you pull one of those, you can keep it or sell it later without worrying.

Two things to check before you sell anything:

  • Is it locked into a collection you're working on? Some cards are required for collections that reward even better cards. Check our Collection Tracker first.
  • Is it a program reward? Program rewards often count toward future collections too, so selling them can cost you later.

Turning a big pull into Stubs early lets you buy the specific cards your lineup needs, which beats hoping for the right pack.

Step 3: Grind the Free Content Before You Go Online

This is where your squad actually gets built. All of it is free, and you can play most of it offline at whatever difficulty you're comfortable with:

  • Programs: missions and Moments that pay out XP, Stubs, packs and cards. New ones release all year.
  • Conquest: map-based mode with packs, Stubs and hidden rewards on each map.
  • Diamond Quest: board-style runs with Diamond rewards along the way.
  • Showdowns: draft-and-play challenges with strong rewards if you clear them.
  • Mini Seasons: short offline seasons with their own rewards.

Here's how they compare:

ModeTime per RunDifficultyMain RewardsBest For
ProgramsOpen-endedScales to your settingsXP, Stubs, packs, the program's top cardsSteady progress across modes
Conquest30 minutes to a few hours per mapEasy on lower difficultiesStubs, packs, hidden rewardsBulk pack and Stub farming
Diamond QuestAbout an hour per mapGets harder as you goDiamond reward cards, packs, StubsChasing specific Diamonds
Showdowns30 to 60 minutesMedium to hardProgram progress, packs, cardsPlayers who like a challenge
Mini SeasonsA few hours per seasonDifficulty selectableTheme cards, completion rewardsRelaxed offline play

Not sure where to start? With 30 minutes, play Moments and a few program missions. With an hour, run a Conquest or Diamond Quest map. With an afternoon, finish a Mini Season or push a program toward its top reward.

One thing to level up as you go: in MLB The Show 26, the cards you play earn Parallel XP, which unlocks Parallel Mods that boost their attributes. Play your core cards often, and check our Parallel Mods guide and PXP Calculator before you apply any Mods.

Step 4: Go Online Once Your Squad Is Ready

Once you've built a squad you're proud of, it's time to play real people. Start with the Multiplayer Program. It's earned through online play, and it usually has some of the best rewards in the mode. Events are the gentlest place to begin, since they have roster restrictions that level the field.

If you're struggling, go to Practice mode and face pitching on a higher difficulty than you're comfortable with. It trains your eye faster than anything else, and online pitching will feel slower afterward.

Your screen matters more than you'd think. Frame rate, refresh rate and response time make a real difference when you're timing a 100 mph fastball. If you play on a TV, turn on Game Mode and check its input lag before you blame your timing. RTINGS' input lag tests are the best place to look your model up. If you're shopping for a screen, see our best gaming monitors for MLB The Show guide.

Step 5: Let the XP Path Fill Up While You Play

While you're doing all of the above, you're also making progress on the XP Path, the program that runs through the year in innings (1st Inning, 2nd Inning and so on). It only moves with gameplay XP, and it doesn't need any special effort: every game you play, online or offline, counts toward it.

With enough time, you'll reach its top rewards, which are some of the cards that keep you competitive both online and offline. That's one more reason to play the modes you actually enjoy: it all adds up on the XP Path.

Step 6: Let ShowZone Do the Math

The biggest time-saver in Diamond Dynasty is knowing exactly what you own and what to do with it. That's what ShowZone is built for.

Free for everyone:

  • Look up any card. The player database has every card with full attributes, prices and our True Overall™ and Meta Overall ratings. The Top 25 rankings show the best cards right now.
  • Plan your lineup. The Team Builder shows how cards fit together before you spend Stubs.
  • Track programs. The Programs page lists every active program with its missions and rewards.

With ShowZone Pro (see plans):

  • Sync your inventory from TheShow.com, so the Team Builder, Collection Tracker and Mission Optimizer work from the cards you actually own. The free ShowZone app uses the same data on your phone.
  • Sell your most valuable duplicates. The Duplicates tab finds the extra copies in your synced inventory and shows which ones are worth the most Stubs, so nothing valuable sits unused.
  • Complete collections efficiently. The full Collection Tracker shows what you're missing and the cheapest path to each reward.
  • Play your best team. Generate your best lineup from the cards you own, optimized by Meta Overall.
  • Grind programs with the right team (Pro Diamond). The Mission Optimizer team generator builds the squad that knocks out the most program missions at once, so every game counts toward more than one goal.

How to Earn Stubs Without Spending Money

Stubs are the in-game currency. You can buy them with real money, but you don't need to. Here's where they come from:

SourceEffortNotes
Program rewardsLow (just play)Steady income all year
Conquest mapsMediumStubs and packs on every map
Diamond QuestMediumStubs alongside Diamond rewards
Selling pack pullsNoneSell what you won't use, early
Selling duplicatesNoneExtra copies turn straight into Stubs (the ShowZone Duplicates tab ranks yours by value)
Roster update investingMediumThe biggest Stub engine outside of gameplay

Roster updates are where Stubs really grow. During the MLB season, SDS updates Live Series card ratings based on real-life performance. In MLB The Show 26 that happened about every week (26 updates between March 27 and October 2), with a pause for the postseason. When a player's rating goes up enough, his card can jump a tier (Silver to Gold, or Gold to Diamond), and its quicksell and market value jump with it.

Buying those players before the update, then selling after, is how many players turn a few thousand Stubs into hundreds of thousands without spending a dollar. Start small with Silver-to-Gold candidates, which are cheap and less risky.

Our Roster Update Predictor, built in partnership with LouisAnalysis, uses real MLB stats to project who's likely to move (the full predictor is part of ShowZone Pro). Pair it with the free marketplace flipping tool and, with Pro Diamond, Investment Intelligence to see what the community is buying.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Buying packs with real money before you know what you need. Most pulls aren't the cards you're after. Buy specific cards on the marketplace with Stubs instead.
  • Selling cards you need for collections. Always check the Collection Tracker before you sell.
  • Going online too early. A weak squad against real players is frustrating and slow. Build up offline first.
  • Holding expensive pulls "for later." Outside a few superstar exceptions, cards lose value over time.
  • Trying to use Create-A-Players in Diamond Dynasty. In recent games, CAPs are offline-only and can't be used in the mode.

Wrap-Up

The path through Diamond Dynasty is simpler than it looks: open your free packs, sell what you don't need, grind the free content, go online when you're ready, let the XP Path fill up, and let ShowZone handle the math.

You don't need to spend money, and you don't need to play 40 hours a week. You just need to spend the time you have in the right order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Open every free pack in your inventory, then finish the starter program and the first free player programs. That gives a brand-new account its first Gold and Diamond cards, which makes every mission after it faster.

No. You can build a fully competitive Diamond squad without spending real money. Free programs, Conquest, Diamond Quest, Showdowns, the XP Path and roster update investing cover everything a new player needs.

Usually, yes. Almost every card loses value as the year goes on, so a pull is worth the most soon after you open it. A few superstar cards hold their value (in recent games, Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge). Check that a card isn't needed for a collection before you sell it.

After you've built a squad you're proud of from the free offline content. Then start with Events and the Multiplayer Program, which usually has some of the best rewards in the mode.

The XP Path is a year-long program broken into innings (1st Inning, 2nd Inning and so on). It only moves with gameplay XP, so every game you play counts toward it, and its top rewards are some of the strongest cards in the mode.

Program rewards, Conquest maps, Diamond Quest and selling cards you don't need all pay Stubs. The biggest earner outside of gameplay is roster update investing: buying players likely to get a ratings bump before an update and selling after.

Yes. Input lag and response time affect your swing timing. Turn on your TV's Game Mode and look its input lag up on RTINGS, or see ShowZone's best gaming monitors guide if you're shopping for a screen.

No. In recent games, Create-A-Players are offline-only and can't be used in Diamond Dynasty.
