When jumping into a game of MLB The Show, one of the first decisions you'll make is how long you want that game to be. While 9-inning games are the standard for real-life baseball, the game offers 3-inning formats for quicker play. Not only that, but several modes in Diamond Dynasty are 3-innings by default.
So what's the real difference?
Game Length and Time Commitment
The most obvious difference is time. A 9-inning game can run 30–45 minutes depending on gameplay pace, while a 3-inning game usually wraps up in under 15 minutes. With many of the quality of life improvements (QOL), that number can even be 10 minutes or less.
If you’re grinding for XP, program missions, or just trying to sneak in a few games on a lunch break—3-inning games are your go-to.
Conversely, if you want a more immersive experience when you aren't strapped for time; the standard 9-inning game is clutch.
Game Mode Innings
In Diamond Dynasty, the game length affects which mode you're in:
- Ranked Seasons: Always 9 innings. It’s the full baseball experience—strategy, bullpen management, and lineup depth all come into play.
- Events/Battle Royale/Diamond Quest: Typically 3 innings. Events offer themed squads and unique rules, so shorter games let you rack up wins (or losses) faster for reward tiers. BR and DQ game are also 3 innings, and any 3-inning game WILL go to extras.
- Conquest & Mini-Seasons: Usually 3 innings, especially early games against low-difficulty CPU teams. They're designed for fast grinding rather than marathon matchups.

Stamina Strats
Shorter games emphasize early offense and top-heavy lineups, since you may only get two at-bats with your best hitters. Relievers and closers with high stamina shine here too, because you may not even need to dig into your bullpen.
Your Starting Pitchers will begin the game with an adjusted amount of Stamina, meaning they'll tire much faster than normal. This provides a sense of "realism" so that SP can't throw a "Complete Game" even if it's a 3-inning game. Naturally, this also means that Stamina drains much quicker so every pitch carries more weight than a full game.
In 9-inning games, stamina, matchups, and in-game decisions are based off the normal calculation of attributes. Meaning, your SP will last longer if pitching well and the immediate consequences aren't as dire as a 3-inning game where risking a yellow or red-barred pitcher can turn the game quickly.
Closing Thoughts
The easiest way to think about this is simply knowing that MLB The Show wants to simulate and emulate baseball as well as possible. In shorter games, the attributes on the cards don't change, but the calculation on their effect in the game certainly will.
This includes Confidence for pitchers as well. Confidence is kinda sorta understood, in that we know it affects a pitcher's ability to hit spots and the stuff behind their pitches. The specific effects on Confidence are a little less understood, but basically, giving up hits and runs is bad and results in Confidence being lowered. Mowing down hitters with ease raises Confidence, ultimately making the pitcher more effective and making it a bit tougher for hitters to make solid contact.
