October brings another round of our monthly True & Meta Overall tuning, the monthly refresh we committed to back in May to keep both ratings live and tracking the meta. This month added 192 new cards since our last tuning, 141 of them 99s, plus a fresh batch of community tier lists. Here's what changed. (New to these ratings? Our True Overall and Meta Overall guide covers how they work and every past update.)
- Meta Overall was re-tuned against 189 community tier lists, the most we've ever used. The headline is how little it needed to move: before we changed anything, the model already fit October's tier lists better than it fit September's. The adjustments were small and all on the hitter side, with no changes to pitchers.
- True Overall™, our AI model, was retrained on the current card pool, and this is its most accurate and most consistent version yet. Its average error dropped noticeably, and its accuracy held steady across every slice of the data we tested it on.
- The all-time scale held up. The new 99 starters landed behind Pedro Martinez, still a fair #3 all-time, rather than leapfrogging the legends. Closers stayed below the top starters, and every position's best card is still under its all-time high.
The bottom line: a steady month. A stable Meta Overall is exactly what monthly tuning is supposed to produce, so the ratings keep pace with the game without big swings.
Frequently Asked Questions
Mostly only slightly, and mostly for hitters. Pitchers held steady, and True Overall's retrain tightened up its accuracy.
It was already tracking the current meta closely. We tune it against the community's most recent tier lists every month, so by October it was in good shape.
