After some fun yesterday with a trio of young superstars claiming ownership of the cover, MLB The Show 25 has been officially announced and it turns out they were all telling the truth!
MLB The Show 25 releases on March 18 for Xbox Series X, Playstation 5, and Nintendo Switch. Early Access begins on March 14 for those purchasing the Digital Deluxe Edition.
Interestingly, it appears that there will not be a Collector’s Edition or Special Edition this year. This year’s iteration will also not be available on subscription services, which means Xbox Game Pass. While this will no doubt disappoint many, it also feels like this was inevitable.
The exclusion of Xbox One and Playstation 4 are a marked shift from the previous console generation. The community has been clamoring for a dynamic new experience with the advent of the latest consoles. SDS’ official communications talk about this year “being built from the ground up” which can certainly light some hope that we’ll see a new engine, meaning all sorts of improvements across the board. I’m not personally turned off by the inclusion of the Switch, as I imagine it can simply run on the same engine it has been. It’s a huge market, and I’d reckon most Switch owners don’t expect “next gen” experiences from games like The Show.
For the first time in franchise history, MLB The Show 25 will feature three cover athletes: Elly De La Cruz, Gunnar Henderson, and Paul Skenes. This dynamic trio represents the next generation of MLB superstars, with electrifying talent that defines “video game” numbers. Each player has also received a 99 overall card in MLB The Show 24 to celebrate the cover announcement.
Notably, LSU’s branding is prominently featured on Skenes’ section of the cover, sparking speculation that NCAA licensing may be making its debut in The Show. Could this mean more college players or NCAA-themed content in the future? Time will tell, but it’s an exciting possibility. The college experience being incorporated into Road to the Show would bring an unparalleled level of immersion to a sorely outdated mode.
With the announcement official, the cover athletes in place, and a release date and pre-order window – hype season has officially begun.
SDS has stated that the first gameplay trailer will drop on February 4 at 9am PST/12pm EST. Pre-orders go live on the same day and we can expect weekly info-drops leading up to release.
